Continuation of Economic Sanctions on Eritrea

The United States has maintained economic sanctions on Eritrea for more than two decades, citing concerns over human rights abuses, military aggression, and support for terrorism. While the Eritrean government has denied these accusations, the sanctions have had a significant impact on the country’s economy and its people.

The sanctions were first imposed in 2001 under the Bush administration, after Eritrea was accused of providing support to Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia. The United Nations also imposed sanctions on Eritrea in 2009, but these were lifted in 2018 after the country made progress in resolving a border dispute with Ethiopia.

Despite the lifting of UN sanctions, the US has maintained its own sanctions on Eritrea, citing concerns over human rights abuses and the country’s ongoing support for terrorist groups in the region. In a statement announcing the renewal of the sanctions in 2021, the US State Department accused Eritrea of “prolonged arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial killings.”

The sanctions have had a significant impact on Eritrea’s economy, which is heavily reliant on foreign aid and remittances from abroad. The country has also faced a number of other challenges, including a severe drought, food shortages, and an influx of refugees from neighboring countries.

Despite these challenges, the Eritrean government has refused to engage with the United States or other international actors to resolve the ongoing conflict. In a statement in response to the renewal of the sanctions in 2021, the Eritrean government accused the US of “baseless accusations” and said it would continue to pursue its own policies regardless of external pressure.

The situation in Eritrea remains complex and challenging, with ongoing concerns over human rights abuses and the country’s role in regional conflicts. While the US sanctions may be intended to pressure the Eritrean government into changing its policies, their effectiveness remains uncertain, and they continue to have a significant impact on the country’s economy and its people.
