Ethiopia’s Tigray region nominates new interim leader: Report

In a significant development for the war-torn Tigray region of Ethiopia, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has announced its nominee for president of a regional administration. The move comes after a peace deal was struck to end a two-year-long conflict in the northern area.

According to party-run media, Tigrai TV, the TPLF has nominated its spokesperson, Getachew Read, for the interim post. The announcement was made on Saturday, March 18, and marks an important step towards stabilizing the region.

The nomination of Read as the interim leader of the Tigray region is seen as a positive move by many in Ethiopia, as he is widely regarded as a capable and experienced administrator. Read has previously served as the head of Tigray’s peace and security bureau, and was also a key negotiator in the peace talks that led to the end of the conflict.

The TPLF, which dominated Ethiopian politics for over two decades, has been in conflict with the central government since November 2020, when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched a military offensive against the region. The conflict resulted in thousands of deaths, as well as widespread destruction and displacement.

Following months of fighting, the government and the TPLF agreed to a ceasefire in June 2021, which was followed by peace talks. The talks culminated in an agreement that called for the establishment of a new regional administration in Tigray, to be led by an interim president.

The nomination of Read as the interim leader is a significant step towards implementing the peace agreement, and is expected to help bring stability to the region. However, there are still significant challenges ahead, as the Tigray region is still dealing with the aftermath of the conflict, including ongoing humanitarian and security issues.

Despite these challenges, many in Ethiopia are hopeful that the appointment of Read will help pave the way for a more peaceful and stable future for the Tigray region.
