Surge in Popularity of E-bikes and E-scooters in UK Leads to Increase in Fires and Injuries

In recent years, there has been a surge in popularity for e-bikes and e-scooters in the UK, but recent data shows that their use comes with a significant risk. According to a report released on Monday, e-bike and e-scooter fires have injured at least 190 people in the UK.

The report, compiled by the consumer watchdog Which?, analysed data from fire services across the country and found that the number of incidents involving e-bike and e-scooter fires has been steadily increasing over the past few years. In 2018, there were 34 reported incidents, while in 2019 that number jumped to 58. In 2020, there were 79 reported incidents, and in the first quarter of 2021 alone, there were already 19 reported incidents.

The injuries sustained from these fires have been severe, with some victims suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. In one instance, a man suffered third-degree burns to his legs and face after his e-scooter exploded while he was riding it.

The cause of these fires is still under investigation, but experts believe that faulty batteries and chargers may be to blame. In recent years, there have been several recalls of e-bikes and e-scooters due to battery issues, and the report suggests that more needs to be done to ensure that these products are safe for consumers to use.

Which? is calling for greater regulation of e-bikes and e-scooters to ensure that they meet strict safety standards before they can be sold to the public. The watchdog also recommends that users follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storing their devices and that they avoid leaving them unattended while charging.

The Department for Transport has responded to the report by saying that they are currently reviewing the regulations surrounding e-bikes and e-scooters and that they will take appropriate action if necessary to ensure that these devices are safe for use.

In the meantime, users of e-bikes and e-scooters are urged to be cautious and to take all necessary precautions to avoid injury.
