The King’s first state visit has been cancelled

In a blow to the UK government’s efforts to reset relations with the European Union (EU) post-Brexit, the King’s first state visit to France has been cancelled due to violent protests in Bordeaux. The visit was supposed to be a key part of the government’s strategy to renew historic ties with Europe.

The decision to cancel the visit was made by French President Emmanuel Macron, who cited concerns over the safety of the King and his entourage due to the ongoing protests in Bordeaux. Demonstrators had clashed with police and set fire to the entrance of the city hall, leading to the cancellation of the trip.

The cancellation comes at a time when the UK is trying to establish new trade relationships with the EU and forge a new path outside of the bloc. The government had hoped that the King’s visit would help to reset relations with the EU and demonstrate a commitment to maintaining strong ties with the continent.

However, the cancellation of the visit is likely to be seen as a setback for the UK government’s efforts to reset relations with the EU. It also highlights the ongoing tensions and divisions that exist between the UK and its European neighbours following Brexit.

Despite the setback, the UK government has vowed to continue its efforts to strengthen ties with the EU and pursue new trade relationships. A spokesperson for the government said: “We are disappointed that the King’s state visit to France has been cancelled, but we remain committed to renewing historic ties with Europe and forging a new path outside of the EU.”
